Synopsis
In 1937, Japanese imperialism launched a full-scale invasion of China. The Japanese army burned, killed, and looted along its path, and the flames of war spread to Henan Province. Wandu City, located in southwestern Henan, had always been a strategic military stronghold, and at this moment, it was in a critical moment of life and death. The Wolong Alcohol Factory within Wandu City was a "Red Factory" established by the underground Communist Party of China with the approval of the Party Central Committee leadership. As alcohol was an important strategic material during wartime, this largest alcohol factory in Wandu naturally became the focal point of overt and covert contention among various parties including the New Fourth Army, the Japanese army, bandits, Military Statistics Bureau agents, and the local security regiment.
Communist Party member Liu Zihao, entrusted by the Party, assumed the public and legal identity of the factory director of the Wolong Alcohol Factory to manage and operate this party-owned enterprise. After arduous experimentation, he finally succeeded in developing high-concentration alcohol, attracting attention from all sides.
Liu Zihao accepted a new task assigned by the Party organization: to transport a batch of supplies from Wandu City to the New Fourth Army's anti-Japanese frontlines. However, Wandu City was suddenly placed under lockdown. For a time, the local security regiment and Military Statistics Bureau agents set up checkpoints throughout the city, inspecting all personnel they deemed suspicious. A chemical expert who had returned from studying in Japan and joined the Communist Party was to pass through Wandu City and proceed to Yan'an with the cover and assistance of Liu Zihao. This information was learned by Military Statistics Bureau agents and Japanese spies, making the expert a target for capture by various parties. Despite employing numerous methods, the expert was still arrested by the Military Statistics Bureau agents. Liu Zihao tried every possible means to rescue his comrade.
Wandu City was fraught with danger and murderous intent, but the constantly emerging difficulties and dangers could not stop Liu Zihao and his comrades-in-arms from persisting in their struggle for the Party's cause and for the victory of the War of Resistance Against Japan, nor their readiness to sacrifice themselves at any moment. Under the leadership and strong support of the Party organization, Liu Zihao united with Bi Zhenzhong, the commander of the local security regiment, turning him into a powerful political umbrella for the Wolong Alcohol Factory. Using his wisdom and courage, together with his comrades-in-arms, he engaged in an arduous and brilliant struggle against various forces within Wandu City, including Military Statistics Bureau agent Jiang Shiwei, unscrupulous merchant Cheng Shilin, Japanese spy Yang Bucheng who had infiltrated Wandu City, and bandit Guo Xiaoyi entrenched in the Wanshan Stronghold. They overcame one difficulty after another, passed through one dangerous juncture after another, providing strategic materials and military funds for the New Fourth Army on the anti-Japanese frontlines. They also made the alcohol factory a cover point for the Party, concealing and transporting revolutionary cadres and wounded New Fourth Army soldiers, and even trained early economic and alcohol specialists for the Party. In the turbulent years of war, Liu Zihao and his comrades-in-arms ensured the survival of this "Red Factory" as a party-owned enterprise. Finally, at the critical moment when Wandu fell, Liu Zihao led a self-defense force composed mainly of alcohol factory workers in an indomitable battle against the Japanese invaders, vowing to defend their homeland to the death.

Behind the Scenes Trivia
  1. Due to the requirements of her role, Zhang Qian's costumes in the drama were opulent and varied; the character she played, a Japanese female assassin, had many martial arts scenes, which caused her considerable hardship.
  2. There is a scene in the drama where Cheng Shilin pays respects to his mother and wife in a mourning hall. When Lou Yujian first read the script, he struggled to grasp the emotional tone of this scene. With guidance from the Director and some veteran actors, he improvised and successfully completed the scene.
  3. During filming, an accidental malfunction of a prop firearm caused Li Man to sustain a gash on her head. However, she did not take a break and continued filming despite the injury.
